Description

On 23 April 1925, the first Saint George’s Memorial was inaugurated, designed by Dupon and Smolderen, two Belgian artists. King Albert, Queen Elisabeth, Vice Admiral Keyes, numerous diplomats and survivors of the attack were present. The statue of Saint George and the dragon was installed on a granite, 20m high memorial column. In 1942, the German occupier dismantled the monument and brought it to Germany.

After 1942, Honorary Mayer Vandamme erected a second Memorial with private funds, but this was demolished during construction of the new canal entrance. The bronze sword which decorated the back was used in the monument for civil and military war victims of the local St Donatianus Church.

The current memorial from 1984 is the third version of the Memorial. It is a triptych in concrete, composed of plaques that evoke the events in the port of Zeebrugge during WWI. The central plaque is taken from the second Memorial.
