The street names reveal why there is such a long, open space in the middle of the city center. Brandhoutkaai, Baksteenkaai, and further down Steenkoolkaai, Schuitenkaai, Kalkkaai, Timmerhoutkaai, and so on. Here was the port of Brussels from the 16th to the 18th century. When this quay was filled in, there was a fish market here for a time. That’s why this square is still colloquially known as the Vismet. The only remnants are the neon lobsters at the tourist restaurant on the left. The water basins are a nod to the gone canal.
This neighborhood has completely come to life over the past 15 years, with countless little cafés, restaurants, a bio-supermarket, chocolatiers, and a very popular glacier. For those ice creams, you’ll need to walk a little further to the Anspach Fountain. To the left, you can see Gaston. When the weather is nice, the queue is accordingly.
