With its 39 ha, the Boerekreek is the largest creek in the Meetjesland. When it was founded in the sixteenth century, it was called the Grote Geule, because it was partly washed out by the floods. It has a very erratic shape, which may indicate previous activity in this area.
7 ha of this creek is recognized as a nature reserve managed by Natuurpunt. The other part, has a recreational character. From 1970 it was operated by BLOSO as a sports center and sailing and surfing camps were offered. In 1982, under the impulse of Landelijke Gilden, Rural Classes organized the first rural classes in Flanders in a number of converted barns near the Sint-Jan-de-Doperkerk. From the Sports and Recreation Centre de Boerekreek, the province of East Flanders has been offering social tourism and sports camps and lessons here since 1999. Rural classes are still offered here. Currently, in addition to water sports, pony rides are also offered. The centre is equipped with an open paddock and a covered riding school. Children can get acquainted with the agriculture of this area in boarding school and external school. They can ride ponies, but also learn a lot about pony care.
In 2008, a new building was built on the site, where one of the first eel restaurants was located at the time. This building, built almost entirely of wood above ground, is an architectural gem and was designed by the architectural firm Coussée en Goris. It was awarded the Flemish Architecture Prize in 2008.
