Due to its location on the nature reserve the 'Kalkense Meersen' and its picturesque but lively village square, the small village of Schellebelle (municipality of Wichelen) is a small tourist attraction.
In 2005 Schellebelle was voted the most beautiful village name in Flanders. A folk etymological explanation assumes that the village name comes from the shrill-sounding bell with which one could call the ferry, while another common explanation is that the bend in the Scheldt was called quelle belle from French boats.
Some sights are the Sint-Jan Onthoofdingkerk, the town hall and the Kot, a small building in the center, originally a call house, later a small prison room. Schellebelle is also the home of Lingerie Van de Velde.
