In the Middle Ages, Middelburg was a thriving small town located near the economic centers of the time: Bruges, Damme, Sluis, and Aardenburg. Founder Pieter Bladelin, a wealthy citizen of Bruges, was a close acquaintance of the Burgundian kings Philip the Good and Charles the Bold. Around 1450, he built his own luxury castle here, the remains of which were excavated about fifteen years ago.
The former castle site is now partly occupied by a new residential area, and little of the grand past is noticeable today in this quiet corner of Flanders. The last major event was the shelling of 1944, which severely impacted Middelburg.
