A little before you approach Turnhout, about where the "Steenweg op Baarle-Hertog" turns into "Little England", a curious building pops up on the right side of the road. If you still have time, it is best to park in the parking lot of the visitor center "Klein Engeland hoeve". Since 1991, the farm has been the home base of the non-profit organisation Trefpunt Toreke, an association that works on the cause of poverty.
But the farm and the surrounding buildings, natural beauty, and fields have a rich history. "Englant" is said to be a Middle Dutch word for meadow or fields that belonged to a village. For a while, the buildings were part of the Borghs-Van der Heijden bleaching plant. At the time (mid-19th century) the ticking was bleached on the fens in the area. The water in the area was so pure that the textile took on a perfect white, silver-plated and shiny colour. At the time, the bleaching plant had 30 to 40 workers.
