Older Brussels residents remember the Antwerpsesteenweg as a vibrant shopping street in the midst of a working-class residential area. The bold expropriations for the Manhattan plan destroyed the neighborhood life. New apartment blocks replaced the demolished homes, but they came too late to rehouse the original residents. On the ground floors, there are restaurants, snack bars, and grocery stores for new residents and the officials from the surrounding offices. The local service center De Harmonie has been a rock in the surf for many older neighborhood residents since 1985. A place where people can go for an activity or advice, and meet each other over an affordable daily dish. The building has been completely renovated in recent years, with plenty of open space and some social senior flats that are rented out by the City of Brussels.
