Some 2,500 Flemish civil servants moved into this passive building in 2017. The ground floor atrium with its winter garden is open to the public during working hours.
The new, black building on the left has a nickname that needs no explanation: the ‘Toaster’. Since 2013, it has housed Brussels Environment, the environmental agency of the Brussels-Capital Region. It too is a passive building, constructed from renewable building materials and with excellent insulation and solar panels on the roof. In the winter it is heated with groundwater, which then provides cooling in the summer. The atrium with its social restaurant is open to the public, often even at the weekend.
