The 1.9 km walled castle domain Borgwal of 18 ha is a feast for the eyes and certainly worth a detour or a shortcut. The picturesque park with a mirrored pond, castle farm, ice cellar, ancient trees, and even a Chinese tea pavilion is accessible to the public.
The tower of the castle dates back to the Spanish period (1583). The domain was a baroque country residence for the Bishop of Ghent, Mgr. Triest, in the 17th century, who erected a beautiful dovecote by the castle farm. The classicist right wing dates from the 18th century, while the left neo-Gothic one is from the 19th century. Recently, the castle was restored and provided with a modern bay window at the back. Since 1975, the O.C. Ebergiste of the vzw Organization Brothers of Love has been offering support and services to adults with intellectual disabilities at the castle domain.
In the cafeteria of the Borgwalhoeve (Leenstraat), you can visit on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, and also on Sunday afternoons during the season.
