This square was laid out at the end of the 18th century in classical style. It may have been inspired by the Place Royale in Reims.
Originally, the former Palace on the Koudenberg stood here. This "castle" was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. Over the centuries, it grew into one of the most important residences for the Burgundian and Brabant dukes such as Emperor Charles. On the night of February 3 to 4, 1731, the palace was destroyed by a fire. Today, the remaining ruins can still be visited.
At the back of the square is the Sint-Jacob-op-Koudenberg church. In this neoclassical church building from the 18th century, Leopold I took the oath as king in 1831. To this day, this church remains connected to the royal family.
In the center stands the impressive statue of Godfried van Bouillon.
Nearby are several museums such as the King's Museums for Fine Arts or the René Magritte Museum.
