The houses around the public gardens are fine examples of Brussels architecture at its best. The façades vie with one another for beauty, often alluding to historical styles. The most innovative of all is the Maison Van Eetvelde (Avenue Palmerston, 4) by Victor Horta; it alone has an iron façade, which made it possible to install large windows. Inside, Horta used narrow, beautifully decorated metal structures that made conventional interior walls superfluous. With the conservatory under its glass roof, he flooded the heart of the house with natural light.
