C-Mine

On November 3, 1906, a concession for the extraction of coal was granted with the concession name 'Genck-Sutendael'. The sinking of the shafts for exploitation proceeded smoothly, without the problems with quicksand layers that other mines had to deal with. On July 28, 1914, just before the outbreak of the First World War, the first block of coal came up from shaft 1. During the German occupation, mining was able to continue more or less. In 1917, Winterslag became the first of the mines in the Kempens Basin to go into production. The mine achieved a yearly production of 1.6 million tons in 1967. The total mine production amounted to 66.6 million tons. In 1953, employment was at its peak with 6250 miners. The underground levels were at depths of 600, 660, 735, and 850 meters.

On March 31, 1988, the coal mine officially closed. Several buildings that reference the mining past still stand on the mine site, including the oldest and the most recently built headframes in Limburg. The mine spoil, 163 meters high, has been transformed into a walking area.
