Nature reserve 'Oude Zuun'

In 2016, VMM restored the old, historic stream arm in the 'Oude Zuun' nature reserve. The result is wonderful and very picturesque! A thick layer of contaminated sludge was removed and disposed of for specialised waste processing. The difference with the completely newly excavated pieces (such as a little further on the Karenberg / Bellestraat) is large. The variation in the banks and bed (hollow and convex, deep and shallow,...) is still partly present in the Oude Zuunbeek. During the works, the vegetation could also be partially preserved. Among other things, an old location of the beautiful Tong fern was spared. In general, the nature reserve is characterized by an almost intact small-scale landscape with rows of trees, pools and hedges. On the damp hay meadows you will find a colourful floral splendor. They are among the most valuable in the entire region.

To reconnect the old Zuunbeek, 2 new pieces of bed had to be excavated (both upstream and downstream). These almost follow the former historical location. As a result, the Oude Zuun nature reserve now forms an island between new and old Zuunbeek. After all, the straight bed was retained as an emergency channel for large flows.
