Great Bosch

Grooten Bosch is located on the right bank of the Hunselbeek. The lower areas are therefore quite soggy. Grooten Bosch is managed by Natuurpunt. Grooten Bosch is a meadow and forest located on the Heidestraat in Strijtem with a total area of 325a 90ca. Two generations ago (around 1950) the meadow was a beautiful orchard with different types of apple trees. Over the years (around the 1970s) these fruit trees were removed and the orchard has been transformed into a grazing pasture for cows. This meadow was leased to a farmer until 1989. Since then, nothing has changed about the meadow. As a result, a roughness has developed over 20 years with a great diversity of plants and herbs. The forest used to be, just like the meadow, a very fertile orchard consisting of apple and cherry trees and currants. The orchard was later supplemented with construction waste due to circumstances (more than 30 years ago). Over the years, a forest was created with a variety of trees, shrubs and plants including acacia, oak.
