Church Saint John - Hertsberge

The Sint-Janskerk or St-Joannes Evangelistkerk is located in the Wingensestraat in Hertsberge.

It is a brick basilica church building with built-in tower. On the west side of the church are two stained glass windows that come from the former chapel of Castle Bulskampveld and were installed here in 1931.

The organ dates from 1911 and was built by the Loncke firm. The interior is predominantly neo-Gothic.

The Sint-Janskerk is surrounded by a gravel road, grass and a brick wall with an entrance door to the adjacent presbytery on the south side, a passage to the cemetery in the north and a passage to the Kerkplein in the east.

After the death of the Baroness of Bulskampveld Castle in 1888, her heir, Baron d'Huart de Broqueville, contacted the diocese to make Hertsberge a separate parish. Baron d'Huart, from Postel, has little contact with Hertsberge and wants to close the chapel of Bulskampveld Castle, which would be disadvantageous for the neighboring residents. Baron Rapaert de Grass, lord of the castle of Hertsberge and baron d'Huart are both willing to donate the necessary land for a new church.
In 1890 the Oostkamp municipal council, chaired by mayor Louis de Bie de Westvoorde, approved the establishment of the parish of Hertsberge. The parish of Hertsberge was founded on May 5, 1891 with Saint John as patron saint, as a reference to the then Bruges bishop Mgr. Joannes Faict.
