Community institution De Zande Wingene

These are the original buildings of the "auxiliary asylum" that was founded under the management of the reform school of Ruiselede, for the sailors' school. In 1853 they started with 65 students.

These buildings were erected in 1857 . These buildings later became the banquet hall, canteen and garages of the radio-electric center in Wingene. The buildings are currently owned by the De Zande Wingene department.

Community institution De Zande Wingene is a department of the community institution De Zande. It is a closed institution for boys. De Zande also has a closed institution for girls in Beernem and a semi-open institution for boys in Ruiselede.

1925 marked the end for the Succursale . The Walloon children left for St.-Hubert and the 53 remaining Flemish children went to Ruiselede. The building was abandoned, attempts to sell it failed and eventually it was transferred to the Telegraaf en Telephone Agency in 1930. Exactly fifty years later, in 1975, the minors will move into new and modern pavilions on the Wingene territory.

It is now called " Community Institution for Special Youth Care De Zande" .

The institution currently provides residential care for underage boys by order of a juvenile court in a semi-open or closed regime.

The juvenile judge can place a young person who has committed an act described as a crime or is in a very difficult living situation in a community institution. In an open campus this is possible from the age of 12, a placement in a closed campus is possible from the age of 14.

Shelter, orientation and guidance for boys up to the age of 20 who have committed an act described as a crime and for minors who find themselves in a problematic educational situation.
