From walking junction 29, follow the route to junction 28. It takes you through the war site Hill 60.
Hill 60, south of Ypres, is of immense strategic importance during the war. Those who own the 60-meter-high hill observe the battlefield. Around Hill 60 there is heavy fighting, even underground. Both sides are undermining each other's positions.
On April 26, 1916, the Germans had a mine jump under Trench 42. The trench, which ran across Wervik Street, is then manned by a platoon of the Canadian 2nd Battalion (Eastern Ontario). The explosion strikes a crater 25 meters wide and 10 meters deep. It is a hell of a job to get the wounded, let alone the dead, from under the rubble. At least four unfortunate people are buried alive: Thomas Riddols, a 21-year-old student from Drayton, Ontario and London-born Bruce Brooks, Edward Archer and Arthur Harris.
