Via the Pluvierstraat we arrive at the church of Saint Anna in the Threes. “This modernist church was built in 1970 on the site where the former Holy Anna and Joachim church stood,” says Patrick. “Architect Jos Ritzen designed the plan. It has a round shape: the priest stood in the midst of the people.”
“There were two other churches on the Left Bank. The chapel of Our Lady of the Scheldt on Gloriantlaan was destroyed after a fire in 2000. Only the portal with the statue of Mary by Albert Poels was preserved. The Saint Luke's Church on Ernest Claesstraat is now the site of the social-ecological project Laudato Si by Sant’ Egidio. In 2004, the three parishes merged. Partly due to the unique glass-in-concrete windows, the Saint Anna in the Threes church was designated as a monument.”
Close to the church used to be Station Antwerp-Left Bank. “Before the construction of the railway tunnel under the Scheldt in 1970, people had to take the ferry to travel to Ghent and take the train from here.”
