Bruges Egg Market

This place was originally called Bergpoel or Ten Berghpoele until 1600. Galbert van Brugge described it as a swampy pool in which one could drown and in which corpses of executed criminals were sometimes thrown.

In the meantime, the name Eiermarkt came into use, which had more to do with the activity. After all, it was the center of the dairy trade .

Today, the lively Eiermarkt only comes alive around 11 a.m. for aperitifs. Early birds are rarely seen here. After all, life is mainly enjoyed here and preferably until the late hours. A square full of ambiance. Today cafes and terraces jostle next to each other.

The 18th-century water pump survived all that time, it functioned as a public fountain and guaranteed fresh and pure water for the inhabitants of Bruges.
