Little Emperor Charles V on a horse - Mechelen

This work of art is located on the Margarethaplein in front of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwgasthuis.

The depiction of Charles V on his easel is a copy of a larger cast bronze statue , some four meters high . The artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragstedt developed this in 2012 for the Fourt Plinth project in Trafalgar Square in London.

This bronze statue , approximately 1.50 m high, is an idealized representation of the young Charles V on a horse. Emperor Charles V grew up with his aunt Margaret of Austria at the court of Mechelen. The palace of Margaret of Austria is a bit further and diagonally opposite. Margareta chooses the huge Hof van Kamerijk as her widow's estate. It is also called Kaiserhof because Emperor Karl stayed here from 1500 to 1515 .
