In November 1985, Albert Van Den Abil's daughter, son-in-law and fourteen-year-old granddaughter were killed by the 'giant' of the Nivelles Gang in the parking lot of the Delhaize store on Parklaan in Aalst. His grandson David Van De Steen, then nine years old, was the only member of the family to survive the massacre. "The Giant" saw David lying on the floor next to a schoolmate. "Don't look," cried the "giant." David Van De Steen looked anyway. He saw how the gray scarf that the man had wrapped over his mouth had sunk away, and he stared him straight in the face. The killer laughed, aimed his weapon – a sawn-off shotgun – with one hand and fired. The child's leg was shattered. Twice the leader of the murder team shot at the child, and he shot to kill. This drama became the basis of the film "Don't shoot" by Stijn Coninx.
A few years after the attack, the boy recognized the "giant" who laughingly pointed his shotgun at him on November 9, 1985. He is convinced that it was Patrick Haemers, the gangster who robbed cash transports in the late 1980s.
