This cliff owes its name to a chivalrous act of heroism. A knight-errant had fallen in love with the wife of the knight of Ouren. His only desire was to kidnap her, and to this end he devised a particularly cunning plan. To fool potential attackers, he had his horse shoeed with inverted horseshoes.
The pursuers would find a trail, which would lead them in the opposite direction. As soon as night had fallen, the knight and his beloved met at the appointed place, at the foot of the citadel.
However, their flight was discovered and that was the impetus for a wild pursuit. The sound of the new horseshoes was clearly audible and the refugees were overtaken as they reached the top of the cliff.
Cornered, the knight put spurs to his horse (the present road did not exist at that time). Horse and riders drowned like rats in the Our. The knight and his fair man survived the fall, but his faithful mount had broken its legs.
The knight swore to have a chapel built, but did not keep his oath and was struck by lightning.
