The Huy cable car

The Huy cable car connects the left bank of the Meuse with the Huy fortress on the right bank. The cable car opened on September 13, 1957.

The cable car was financed by the Belgian state. In the run-up to the Expo 58 world exhibition, the state asked the cities to submit projects for the tourist development of Belgian cities and regions that would encourage visitors to the world exhibition to extend their visit to Belgium with additional days at other locations . Huy and Dinant both submitted a project with a cable car, at that time still unseen in Belgium. Both proposals were selected and Dinant also received a cable car.

Legal troubles threatened the continued existence of the cable car from the start. Residents in the area objected because the cabins passed over their property . Although the verdict was settled in their favor on December 14, 1959, the cable car continued to exist.

The lower station is located in Batta district . After a ride of approximately 5 minutes over a length of 1,500 meters , first over the Meuse and then over the citadel, the cable car ends at the upper station on the Plaine de la Sarte , in the immediate vicinity of the Mont Mosan amusement park and the Onze-Lieve Lady of the Sarte Church . At the level of pier 2 there is an intermediate station that is only served by the cabin on its way to the lower station.

In the early evening of Friday, April 6, 2012 , a helicopter pilot and passenger were killed when their low-altitude aircraft became entangled in a cable and crashed in a small park in the center of Huy near the rue des Tanneurs. .
