Hospice d'Oultremont (Canon House) - Huy

The Hospice d'Oultremont is a former canons' house in Huy (Belgium) from the 16th century on the Namur Quay.

Gerard d'Oultremont, a descendant of the noble D'Oultremont family, was a canon at the collegiate church of Huy and built the canon's house named after him on the site of a dilapidated and smaller canon's house, dating from the Middle Ages. The canons house is located right next to the collegiate church and is connected to it via a bridge with 4 arcades.

The style of the canons house is Gothic-Renaissance . It is built in brick and limestone. The building runs against the rock wall into a tower, with an octagonal superstructure. Behind the residence, on the hill, are the gardens, which are laid out in small terraces. During the time of the prince-bishopric, the fortress above was one of the residences of the prince-bishops of Liège. The canons house was embellished in the 18th century. So there was a fountain downstairs with a water-spewing fish.

With the Liège Revolution (1789-1795), the chapter in Huy was abolished, as elsewhere in the principality.

The building has been classified since 1933 and in 1993 it was recognized as a historic monument of Wallonia.
