The Great Crestle

Description

In 1552 the Scheldedijk broke. Due to the force of the water that flows into the polder, a deep gully hole ('a wheel') is formed. They tried to close the gap, in vain, and eventually in 1554 a new collar dike was made in the form of a ring. Thirty years later, the wheel has even landed to such an extent that it can be dammed. Pedro Coloma is building a new dike at the level of the original dike and the diked marsh can now grow further into a polder. Due to the silted material, the area between the dikes is now higher than that in the area, so that the Groot Schoor has an excellent groundwater management and lent itself to arable farming and fruit cultivation.

Behind the kraagdijk there are 2 remnants: the Groot and Klein Kraagwiel. According to legends, the Kragewiel owes its name to the special intervention of Our Lady from the Krocht in Bormen. When the dike broke and the Wheel was flushed, they tried in vain to stop the opening. This did not work at first, but when the statue of Our Lady of the Crown was carried to the lake, the breakthrough immediately stopped. The place was thus given the name "Krochterwiel", now Kragewiel.
