In the Middle Ages, this wooded hill was an agricultural estate managed by the farm Hof ter Wilst (which is mentioned as early as the 13th century). The current forest owes its name to that farm. For a long time, the hill was owned by the Carthusian monks of Scheut, who also extracted limestone. This can still be seen in the uneven relief, which indicates the former quarry. The hill was forested around 1515 and then brought back into cultivation. In the 19th century, the site was transformed into a landscape park in English style, but around 1920 it was left to its fate, allowing the hill to spontaneously reforest.
In 1993, the area was taken over by Leefmilieu Brussel, which created a semi-natural public park. The majority of the site consists of spontaneous forest vegetation. At the bottom of the hill, the area is more open, and you can find a marshy area (where the Paruckbeek springs) and a vegetable garden.
