St. Amandus Church Uitkerke

Description

In 1089 a church was built on a mound. There could also have been a parish before that time, because possibly in 961 there could be mention of the parish of Utkerca and it is even claimed that Saint Eligius founded a house of worship here in 650.

In 1572 the church was probably destroyed by the Water Beggars , and a church account of 1578-1579 states that the church must have been destroyed by fire. The church was restored in 1579 and repairs were also carried out in 1643-1645.

The church tower was restored in 1866, and from 1889 to 1892 the church was extensively renovated and expanded by building a new church in neo-Gothic style around the old church . The north aisle was demolished, and the old nave was transformed into Our Lady's aisle. The south aisle was raised and transformed into a nave, to which a choir was added. A new south aisle was also built, dedicated to Saint Amandus . Some masonry of the Gothic church remained visible.

This created a three-aisled hall church with a heavy tower on the northwest side on a square plan, equipped with buttresses and with an octagonal spire.

The surrounding cemetery fell into disuse from 1952 due to the construction of a new cemetery. It was closed down in 1980. Only part of the wall remained.
