Infrabel has heavily invested in eliminating level crossings in Herstal. This involved a pedestrian crossing. With this, one can nearly bicycle or walk along the railway from Milmort to the center of Liège. Only in a few places are there gaps, totaling perhaps 1000 meters.
The Rue du Bériwa could find a place in this. This street was called Beau Roua on the 1841 map. The Roua was a stream. But in 1841, that beautiful Roua or Rida was black with coal sludge. Today, this little river is underground. Just before the path that goes under the railway, they had bricked up a drainage gallery from a mine during the construction of the railway embankment in 1860. After a water breakthrough, the construction site was flooded.
