In Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver, there are still some remnants of the Waver woods that once encompassed almost the entire municipality: the Hondsbossen, Gasthuisbossen, and Zuurbossen. We walk through the forest Verloren Hoek. “The Waver woods was an extensive forest with oaks, located east of Mechelen,” says Rudi. “It was already mentioned on September 12, 1008, in a deed by King Henry II. According to some writings, this forest covered the entire area between the Dijle, the Nete, and the Grote Nete. With the arrival of the villages and the construction of churches, the forest has become smaller and smaller.”
On the corner of Scheerslei and Erfstraat, we see two historical farms. At Scheerslei 5, there is the beautifully restored sheepfold farmhouse from the 18th century. “The farmhouse consists of a large residential barn and a bakehouse. The barn, where the cows were kept and which provided heating in the house through their body heat, has disappeared. In 1987, the farmhouse was protected as a monument.” On Erfstraat, we have a beautiful view of the towers of the Ursuline convent, which gave the village the nickname ‘Torekenswaver’.
