Eugène is not an ordinary baker. Yes, you can buy multi-grain bread and Sunday rolls here, but they are made with dairy-free and gluten-free alternatives instead of butter or wheat. “The base of our gluten-free bread is corn starch, tapioca starch, and gluten-free wheat flour. I ensure that it’s not empty bread by adding nutritious ingredients like teff, buckwheat, and quinoa,” says owner Damien Van herck.
People come from Ghent and the Netherlands to Volkstraat for Damien's baked goods. Because they know they can be at ease here, with an owner who himself has celiac disease and a cow's milk allergy.
You can also enjoy a roll with vegan cheese, a pastry or waffle with a cup of coffee or tea on-site. If you want to try your hand at home or surprise a colleague, friend, or family member with intolerances: Eugène also has ready-made baking mixes, which according to the packaging, always turn out well. From pitch black Algarve bread to pancakes and waffles.
