Marienbrunnen with Marian column - Eupen

Description

The neo-Gothic column, a work by the Aachen sculptor Mohr based on plans by the Cologne architect V. Statz, was built around 1857 .

As part of a fundamental restoration in 1913, the fountain was redesigned by the Eupen sculptor Christian Stüttgen.

After the Immaculate Conception of Mary became a dogma in 1854, a new figure of Mary, seated on a column with a water fountain , was put into use on the initiative of the mayor of Eupen, Peter Becker, and the population, and was inaugurated in 1857. When the figure of the Virgin Mary threatened to fall some 25 years after its creation, the column was restored for the first time in 1882 and was given three new fountain basins arranged in a circle.

During the restoration in 1913, the old triple fountain system was removed and replaced by a new hexagonal fountain basin around the column.

The 5.60 m high and narrow column with the statue of the Virgin Mary was made of yellow sandstone.

The cylindrical structure is engraved with the text: "in honorem Beatae - Mariae sine labe concepta - CathoLICorVM DonIs ereCta" ("Erected in honor of the blessed Mary, conceived without original sin, with the gifts of the Catholics"), which was later renewed with gold paint.
