Old Town Hall - Eupen

Description

The building of the cforms a whole with the neighbouring church on the right. These properties are the remains of the Capuchin monastery.

On 19 September 1797, two years after the incorporation of Belgium, Liège and Stablo-Malmedy into the French Republic by the law of 1 October 1795, the Capuchins had to abandon the monastery. After having served as a salt and hay storage facility, the church building was placed under the administration of the Saint-Nicolas parish by the Concordat of 1801, while the actual monastery building became the property of the municipal authorities of Eupen by decree of 19 May 1808. From 1808 onwards it became a Napoleonic “École secondaire” . Since 1863, the former Capuchin monastery has served exclusively as the seat of the municipal authorities of Eupen; it only has the ground plan in common with the original buildings from the 17th century.

In 1995-1996, architect Lorenz Willems (†) connected the town hall building (no. 14) with the neighbouring building no. 10 on the left with a glass corridor on the first floor. Along the neighbouring building, a glass staircase also leads to the ground floor outside.

Since 2021, the offices of the Eupen Tourist Information Office and the City Marketing Council have been located here.
