Coach house of Poeke Castle

The coach house of Poeke Castle is a remarkable outbuilding that is of both architectural and historical importance.

Situated on the south side of the castle grounds, near a side entrance on Kasteelstraat, the coach house was built in the second half of the 19th century, probably between 1872 and 1875 , during the large-scale renovations led by Baron Victor Pycke de Peteghem.

The coach house is designed in a neo-Flemish Renaissance style and has a U-shaped plan. The central section consists of a seven-bay arcade with depressed arches, with the central bay accentuated by a crowning pediment with a clock , flanked by decorative mouldings and ornamental vases. The side wings contain rectangular windows and doors, and square turrets with slate pointed roofs have been added to the rear.

Originally, the coach house served as a stable for carriages and horses , and may have housed staff such as coachmen and grooms. The building probably also contained rooms for storing harness and other supplies.

In July 2024, the castle domain, including the coach house, was transferred to the Flemish government. Tourism Flanders has announced plans to give the coach house a new function as a family-friendly brasserie with a large and sunny terrace.
