Description
The Kortrijk clay is considered a fatty clay layer, sand-free, and dark in color. This makes it particularly suitable for the production of roof tiles.
Fact: This type of clay is mined in the highest areas. This gave many of the hilltops the name “clay tops.”
At the “Dewitte” quarry on Lauwsestraat in Aalbeke/Lauwe, Wienerberger extracted clay for many years for the production of roof tiles at the nearby factories in Aalbeke and Mouscron. After mining, the quarry was filled with uncontaminated soil from infrastructure works in the surrounding area. When these works were completed, a beautiful green zone was developed. The large pond, about 1 ha in size, is surrounded by hay meadows that transition into a forest via a forest edge vegetation and is part of the Preshoek forest.
