The region of the Kleine and Grote Nete is located in the Antwerp Kempen and forms a unique lowland river landscape. Wet, in other words. The area is often referred to as the Nete basin and encompasses the catchment area of both rivers, which meet in Lier and continue as the Beneden-Nete towards the Rupel.
Here you will find a distinctly meandering course of the rivers and a low gradient, resulting in abundant wet nature, meadows, forests, ponds, and sandy ridges. Unique natural areas such as the Steenbeemden along the Kleine Nete combine wet valleys with dry river dunes and provide a home to rare plants and animals.
The Grote Nete is also referred to as the "Loire of the Kempen" due to the many castles along its banks.
The region is popular among hikers and cyclists, with numerous paths along rivers, castles, and through valuable nature.
