Statue of Mary by Eduard Nulens

The Hesselsberg is an 87 m high hill, one of the offshoots of the Kempens low plateau. At the top of the hill stands a 6-meter high statue of Mary. The KSA of Limburg planned to build a 'Mary Castle' on Hesselsberg in 1946: an infrastructure for youth with playgrounds. In the meantime, a statue was placed. However, the Mary Castle was never built and the plaster statue fell from its pedestal during a storm four years later and was shattered. The people of Zutendaal provided a new statue, made of pumice stone, which was inaugurated in 1954. Once a year, at the beginning of October, a 'candle procession' walks from the church to this place.

During the French Revolution, a battle was fought at this location. The citizens, the 'patriots', rebelled against the nobility and the clergy, the 'aristocrats'. Liège rebels clashed there with German troops who had come to aid the ousted Prince-Bishop of Liège on August 9, 1790, at 2:00 AM.
