This bench is located in the castle domain Vilain XIIII.
The park originally faced directly onto the Scheldt River . The Viscount had privileged access to the river. Today, the Scheldt dike physically separates the park from the river, but the view from the upper floors of the castle (the side that was once the "front") over the bend in the river remains intact.
In the 19th century, it was fashionable among the nobility to plant exotic tree species to impress guests; many of these trees are now nearly 200 years old . Although part of the park was parceled out for the Queen Astrid District, several impressive monumental trees dating back to the Viscount's time still stand: several very old plane trees and beeches . A striking feature is the bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), which thrives in the moist Scheldt soil.
