In the vicinity of Hoogstraten are also the two remarkable border phenomena of the Belgian enclaves of Baarle-Hertog. They are numerous small islands of Belgium completely surrounded by the Netherlands.
This curiosity arose in 1198, when the Duke of Brabant granted part of the village of Baarle as a fief to the Lord of Breda. This situation has remained unchanged to this day. The Dutch portion belongs to the municipality of Baarle-Nassau. Only by the flags next to the house numbers can you tell whether you are on Dutch or Belgian territory.
