In the castle of Cleydael, near Aartselaar, Cornelis Sanders van Hemessen was beheaded in 1459 on the orders of Philip the Good. The cause is said to have been that he thwarted Philip the Good's plans by offering help and assistance to Jacoba of Bavaria, who was considering a new marriage. Legend has it that his spirit still roams here. The beautiful castle is set in the midst of a pond fed by the Struisbeek. Around the pond, there is another legend of a ringed snake or an eel with 9 eyes. This creature would regularly leave its mud bath and disturb the rippless surface of the pond. Another remarkable attribute in the castle is a marble column where the head of Rubens can be recognized. Unfortunately, the castle cannot be visited.
