At the Cleydael castle, near Aartselaar, Cornelis Sanders van Hemessen was beheaded in 1459 on the orders of Philip the Good, as he allegedly thwarted the latter's plans by providing aid and assistance to Jacqueline of Bavaria, who was considering a new marriage. Legend has it that his spirit still haunts the place. The magnificent castle is surrounded by a pond fed by the Struisbeek. Around the pond floats a second legend, that of a snake or an eel with nine eyes. This creature would regularly leave its swamp to disturb the smooth surface of the pond.
Another remarkable curiosity of the castle is a marble column on which one can recognize the head of Rubens.
