The comic universe in Charleroi

The school known as Marcinelle, which was formed around the authors of the newspaper 'Spirou', was established in Charleroi. The newspaper of the famous little piccolo was first published in 1938 and is the work of the Dupuis publishing house, located on rue Jules Destrée in Marcinelle. The first albums of the Dupuis heroes were printed there in 1965. Franquin, Morris, and Jijé were the three authors around whom the Marcinelle school was formed. Thus, Spirou, Boule et Bill, Lucky Luke, Buck Danny, the Smurfs, Natascha, Gaston Lagaffe, Yoko Tsuno, Papyrus, the Bluecoats, Mélusine, Cédric, Largo Winch were born... Today, Editions Dupuis represents more than 200 comic book authors. As a tribute, we find traces of this prestigious history in Charleroi: sculptures and decorations of metro stations.
