Market with statue of Ambiorix, O.L.V. Basilica, Gallo-Roman museum and Theseum; Medieval city wall on Roman foundation with city gate Moerenpoort; Beguinage
In 57 BC, the Romans began their conquest of Gaul and established a camp in Tongeren (Atuatuca Tungrorum) in 54 BC. Under Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD), Atuatuca Tungrorum became a civitas (capital), the Civitas Tungrorum, and obtained the status of municipium (city with administrative rights with limited Roman citizenship). The city had a temple complex, baths, a forum, and was surrounded by a 4544 m long wall with 22 towers. After raids by Germanic tribes in the 3rd century, the city received a smaller wall that was easier to defend (2680 m). After the Roman period, the trading city was for centuries the target of invasions and destructions. In the 13th century, the city got a medieval wall. This lasted until Louis XIV had the city walls blown up in 1677 during the Franco-Dutch war (1672-1679) and set the city on fire.
