Over the centuries, the Maas regularly shifted its riverbed, sometimes over considerable distances. The Maas does not limit itself to its summer bed. Especially in winter, when a lot of water flows from the Ardennes, the Maas wants to take possession of part of the surroundings. These so-called floodplains occasionally go underwater. In this way, the Maas contributes to the unique flora and fauna that can be enjoyed by cyclists in drier seasons. Long ago, the inhabitants of the Maas banks had already set their sights on the economic and strategic opportunities of the river. This is how cities like Stokkem and Oud-Rekem were created, both worth a visit. Along the way, you also cycle past villages like Meeswijk, Leut, Kotem, and Uikhoven; quite interesting to take a look at.
