The Grotenhout (300 hectares) is located on the border of Lille and Vosselaar. It is one of the few large, ancient forests in the Kempen and has a rich history.
The first written mention dates back to 1320. Hunting or timber production were the main functions in the past. Today, a diverse biodiversity is the asset. The area contains about 100 hectares of oak forest over a hundred years old, as well as beech, ash, and alder forests. Part of it is an inaccessible forest reserve. Eight species of bats flutter around. The roe deer and the stoat have their home here. No fewer than 360 plant species have been recorded.
There is a short walk that circles around the pond. The longer walk is a bit more adventurous and also goes over unpaved paths. In bad weather, boots are recommended.
