A short circular walk through the smallest town in Belgium, the municipality of Messines.
Like the entire region, Messines was also heavily impacted during World War I.
We start at the marketplace, where the old town hall has been transformed into a tourist information center and visitor center.
We walk to the Sint-Niklaas Church, an old abbey church with a very rich history. You can visit the crypt and climb the church tower.
While enjoying unique views of northern France, we head towards Iers Peace Park. On the grounds stands a Celtic tower. Over a footbridge, past a work of art made of natural materials and the football field, we reach the New Zealand Memorial. Passing by the youth hostel Peace Village, we head to the Messines Ridge British Cemetery, an impressive war cemetery with a memorial for missing New Zealand soldiers.
