Directions:
The nickname for the residents of Dadizele is a delightful West Flemish word. The statue of the Pompeschitter can be found in the municipal park 't Torreke next to the Basilica of Dadizele. Here begins the hiking trail that explores the heights around the pilgrimage village. We walk along gentle fields and green meadows, passing chapels and old farms with stories. On the quiet paths, we see remnants of the First World War and enjoy magnificent views of the valley. To conclude, we stroll through the rosarium and the castle park of Dadizele, after which we relax on one of the many terraces at the market square.
On the way:
Basilica of Dadizele
Dadizele has been a famous pilgrimage site since the 14th century; pilgrims come to venerate the alabaster statue of Our Lady with Child. The present-day basilica was built in the second half of the 19th century. Alongside the Holy Blood Chapel in Bruges and the church of St. Andrew's Abbey of Sevenkerken (Bruges), this is the only basilica in the Diocese of Bruges. Although the basilica continues to be regularly visited by pilgrims, more and more tourists are coming to admire the basilica for its beautiful neo-Gothic architecture designed by the English architect Edward Welby Pugin.
The Pompeschitter
The Pompeschitter stands in the hiking park 't Torreke. A villager once enjoyed beer and plum pie so much that - you will see how the combination ferments - he experienced stomach problems. On his way home, the need was great, and the good man sought refuge in a 'Pompebak' somewhere in the village. This did not go unnoticed.
Château Superette
Château Superette steals your heart because here people still take their time. The village shop is located in the Mariënstede castle and sells only the best, most delicious, and most beautiful products from the region. Fresh cheese, homemade chocolate, asparagus, strawberries ... each product has its story. Think of it as a creative concept store, with a coffee bar, but at a rural pace.
