Stramprooierbroek - green - 3.3 km

A large part of the forest in ’t Hasselterbroek was planted with American oak. Here, timber is regularly cut to give the original oak-birch forest another chance. Large grazers like Konik horses lend a hand. In the Stramprooierbroek itself, you will find wet marshes with alder and willow scrub, oak forests, meadows with hedgerows and ponds, stately avenues of oaks, and certainly the Abeek and Lossing.
For centuries, the ‘broek’ was an inaccessible place. Several smuggling routes ran through it, and the marshland and forests served as a hiding place for escaped prisoners of war during World War II. The wettest areas were spared from exploitation, so you can now enjoy the tranquility and space in one of the quietest spots in Limburg. The abundant presence of water makes the Stramprooierbroek and the adjacent natural areas the richest dragonfly area in the Benelux. But for many plants, butterflies such as the large marsh fritillary, and other animals, the Stramprooierbroek is a paradise on earth. So there are plenty of reasons to put on your boots and explore the treasures of this area.
