We begin our walk at the Regional Museum (Reinvoart) in Loksbergen. On Saturdays and Sundays, you can enjoy a delicious regional beer or even a local wine here... preferably after the walk. People who love beautiful old chapels will have to squint their eyes here and there during our tour, as the specimens encountered often are terribly ugly. Nevertheless, the landscape is very beautiful. First, we climb about 50 meters up the Molenberg, having first overcome such a chapel. Just before the summit, we turn left onto our first forest resident path. Upon arriving at the bottom, we pass the "Kluis von Reynrode" on the Old Leuvensebaan, a hermitage of the third order of the shoed Carmelites, founded at the end of the 17th century. Now it is a fruit storage... We veer a bit further right and walk through one of the deepest forest resident paths in Flanders. On the slopes, you can clearly see the iron sandstone, which is so important for viticulture. Upon reaching the top, we emerge among the fruit trees; here mainly pears.
In the distance, we can already hear the highway E314, significantly disturbing the rural peace. We briefly walk parallel to it, but then the path veers off, and we return to a forest resident path where the trees dampen the noise. In Zelk, we are halfway through our hike. Be careful not to ride up the bike path along the railway here. We make a short detour because we have to go over the bridge. Beyond the bridge, about five unruly, loud dogs try to scare you a bit, but the fearless, cool hiker naturally overlooks this. Noisemakers!
Now we zigzag through a more open landscape towards the iron extraction area. Near this farm, the Battle of the Silver Helmets took place on August 12, 1914, during which the German troops were temporarily pushed back. Close to the farm stands a memorial.
Along the IJzerenbeek, we then walk towards Loksbergen. In the village itself, we take a short round through the new residential area, where it is evident how humanity gnaws at nature.
And now the well-deserved regional beer or glass of wine.
