Hortense Daman (Clews 1926-2006) lived with her parents on pleinstraat as a child. As a 13-year-old, she became involved in the resistance. She helped her brother François to help the Allies escape and she worked mainly as a courier. On February 14, 1944, the Gestapo raided grocery store No. 130 and arrested Hortense and both her parents. She was convicted without trial and deported to Ravensbrück but survived the concentration camp. In the Hortense Damanhof, where this walk passes, Hortense was immortalized in a mural by artist Gerolf Van de Perre.
