The Canal du Centre (variant Bois-du-Luc)

Head to the Cantine des Italiens for a 30 km bike ride along the boat lift route of the canal du centre historique in the province of Hainaut.

On this balmy spring morning, there is a pleasant atmosphere in La Louvière. We are far from the stereotypes of the "Black Country". The RAVeL takes us on a beautiful journey back in time.

We pedal along the Centrumkanaal for a discovery of four samples of 19th century steel. These hydraulic lifts are the only ones in the world that still work! Throughout the route, works of art appear: iron bridges and swing bridges. Cycling along the canal is very enjoyable!

Around us is the countryside, while the industrial city is nearby. In Houdeng-Aimeries you can see the mining site of Bois-du-Luc (UNESCO heritage). It is only 2km from the canal and is definitely worth a visit.

From the historic Canal du Centre, we pedal to the new Canal du Centre and pass the giant cable car of Strépy-Thieu.

Departure: From the Cantine des Italiens, Rue Tout-yFaut 90 at 7110 Houdeng-Goegnies, along the historic canal of the Centre.

Signage: No signage, follow RAVeL signs along the canals (RAVeL 1 and 1a).

Parking: Next to the Cantine des Italiens (arrows of La Louvière).
